Holiday Movie Recommendations

By Diana Morose

Amid more chilly weather (for Miami) and holiday festivities upon us, a fundamental aspect for this time of year is holiday-centered media. We turned to our student body to provide recommendations of some of their favorite holiday movies.

Isaiah Tuck, a senior TV and digital media major, recommended “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” The movies follow young Kevin McCallister as he is left on his own without parental supervision and finds creative ways of stopping a bandit duo in their tracks.

“These used to be my go-to holiday movies back when I was younger. It would always be on TV, especially on ABC Family when they used to have their 25 Days of Christmas event,” said Tuck.

A recommendation that fits spooky season comes from Adam Bouamra, a senior advertising and public relations major, who highly regards the “Halloweentown” series. The series consists of four movies (“Halloweentown,” “Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge,” “Halloweentown High,” and “Return to Halloweentown”) and follows 13-year-old Marnie Piper as she and her two younger siblings discover they come from a family of witches after following their grandmother to Halloweentown.

“I wanted to be in the movie when I was growing up. I would love to be in that situation, you know, discovering that I have magic powers,” said Bouamra.

Conrad Prophete, a senior majoring in advertising and public relations, recommended the 1997 horror film “Jack Frost” that simultaneously brings a bit of Christmas spirit. It follows serial killer Jack Frost who gets turned into a snowman on the way to his execution and proceeds to go on murder spree.

“I haven’t forgotten about this movie since the first time I watched it. The plot of an evil snowman was something I’ll never forget. It’s like a good mix of Christmas and Halloween,” said Prophete.

Lizbeth Viera, a junior advertising and public relations major, recommended the 2000 film “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” an adaptation of the children’s story by Dr. Seuss that tells the tale of a reclusive Grinch that plans to ruin Christmas for the citizens of Whoville.

“The story just brings childhood nostalgia. The essence of the story and the lessons it taught about morality and goodness stuck with me when I was a kid, and they still hold up today,” said Viera.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” was one of the most mentioned movies. The 1993 film is a Halloween-Christmas hybrid that could be enjoyed throughout the entirety of the festive season as it tells the story of Jack Skellington, who’s tired of scaring people and plans to kidnap Santa Claus to take his place.

Kaleb Telfer, a senior majoring in communications and media studies, was split between “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

“'Nightmare before Christmas" with Jack Skellington is a classic. If you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it, but I think the Grinch is really the embodiment of Christmas spirit,” he said.

If you have not seen one of the movies recommended, maybe take the time to watch it with friends and family during this holiday season, and hopefully add it to your holiday movie rotation.
