The National Collegiate Athletic Association began allowing student-athletes to earn money from their NIL, also known as Name, Image, and Likeness, in 2021. NIL was ultimately allowed due to a combination of legal, public, and legislative pressures, which include athlete advocacy and states passing laws that would allow college athletes to receive compensation for their NIL.
Student-athletes are now able to receive compensation for endorsements, social media activities, personal appearances, and other ventures related to NIL. This marked a significant shift in college athletics, providing athletes with new opportunities to benefit financially from their personal brand while still participating in collegiate sports.
At Barry University, there are a few student-athletes, like basketball player Peter Moe and softball player Samantha Rosenberger, who have been impacted by the NIL. Moe is a sophomore pursuing a degree in communication while Rosenberger is a sophomore pursuing marine biology.
When it comes to the impact NIL has made in Moe's life, he describes it as a great opportunity and explains that financial compensation alleviates some economic pressures being faced, providing more resources.
“It was always nice to get a couple extra hundred dollars to have to spend on groceries or whatever you want,” said Moe.
Meanwhile, Rosenberger discusses the connections she’s made by utilizing her NIL.“I have been able to make connections with people who care about me and my success. Having such a supportive team working behind me to create my image is extremely reassuring,” said Rosenberger.
A day in the life of a college student often involves a demanding schedule that balances academics, athletics, and personal commitments. While specifics can vary depending on the sport and level of competition, for Moe it is an eventful one.
“A typical day balancing everything for a college athlete is pretty hectic, but early mornings we have skill workouts, then class. After class, I get my shots in, then we have weights and at night, team practice,” said Moe.
The schedule of a college student-athlete is undeniably characterized as hectic. Moe explains his NIL deals were utilized, for example, to work at a camp, have dinner with school donors, and make appearances at events for NIL compensation. With their rigorous training, academic load, and physical and mental fatigue, student-athletes have limited free time in their schedule.
College student-athletes often use various strategies to manage their time effectively between NIL engagements, sports, and studies. Some common approaches may be detailed planning, goal setting, or study techniques, which can help better their various commitments, maintain their performance across all areas, and navigate the demands of their busy schedules.
Several factors are considered when deciding which brands or companies to partner with for NIL deals: alignment with personal values, financial consideration, and audience engagement.
“I think about what the brand stands for and what it represents, and if this aligns with my own morals,” said Rosenberger.
For Moe, financial factors are his main reason. Fair financial compensation helps off set the demands of these commitments and compensates for the time they dedicate to fulfilling sponsorship obligations. NIL deals can also offer valuable financial opportunities that may contribute to their long-term career prospects. A well-structured deal might also include incentives based on performance or milestones.
In order to take advantage of NIL opportunities, college student-athletes may have to overcome some difficulties when it comes to the complexities of contracts. Understanding financial terms often requires legal advice, which can be costly and time-consuming. In the context of Rosenberger’s situation, her top priority is ensuring the right brands use her NIL.
“Yes, I think the most challenging part of navigating NIL opportunities is ensuring that it is the right brand for me, and it is a good fit. There are also lots of scams and gimmicks out there, so I have to make sure it’s the real deal,” said Rosenberger.
College athletes should seek to partner with brands that reflect their personal values and public image. Aligning with brands that do not correspond with these principles can jeopardize their reputation and limit future opportunities.
As NIL continues to evolve, more college athletes continue to take part. Financial gain, building a personal brand, and exposure tie into the impact NIL has on college athletics. Ultimately, the ramifications of NIL will define the future of collegiate athletics, affecting not only the athletes but also the institutions and communities that back them.
