The annual Stay Woke Speech & Debate Competition hosted on November 4 in the David Brinkley Studio was yet again a spectacular event. The relatable debate topics, persuasive student speakers and event organization were lively and fulfilling.
Coming in at third place was Senior Paige White who eloquently debated against the notion that financial literacy should be a required course at colleges and universities. Her notable opponent was Junior Michael Kronner.
Up next, claiming second place, was Freshman Talia Shalom who splendidly debated against the belief that the rise of femicide indicates that there are inadequate legal protections for women around the world. Sophomore Destiny Lamarre debated in the affirmative.
Ultimately, taking first place was Senior Sean Chin Loy who powerfully debated against the statement that artificial intelligence tools should be banned in primary and secondary education. His noteworthy opponent was Sophomore Jalen Waters.
As an honorable mention, Freshman Arden Homidas solo debated against the thought that social media platforms should be held legally accountable for the rise in harmful disorders among children and teens.
The Buccaneer congratulates the winners and encourages all the contestants of the 2024 Stay Woke Speech & Debate Competition to “stay woke” on contemporary issues that influence our world.
